Turn application deadlines into a workable weekly plan

Track the tasks behind each deadline so a college application becomes manageable work instead of one looming date.

Create one reliable source of dates

For every college, record the application route you are considering and verify its deadline on the college's official admissions pages. Note the year, any stated time and time zone, and the page you checked. A date copied from an old spreadsheet or search snippet should remain unconfirmed until you verify it.

Keep application deadlines separate from deadlines for supporting materials, portfolios, interviews, or other requested steps. Some dates may coincide; others may not. Record what each date refers to instead of compressing everything into one label that hides unfinished work.

Break the application into deliverables

List the work you control, such as completing forms, drafting essays, checking activity descriptions, and reviewing program choices. Then list dependencies, including recommendations or records that someone else needs to provide. Give each task a clear next action.

Replace 'work on application' with a task you can finish in a session: outline the community essay, check the course-history entries, or confirm the recommender request process. Small deliverables make it easier to see progress and identify a blocker while there is still time to address it.

Plan backward and leave review time

Choose your own completion targets before the official deadlines. Work backward to reserve time for drafting, feedback, corrections, and a final review. Consider your school workload and other commitments when deciding what you can realistically finish each week.

Put a few specific tasks on the week's calendar rather than scheduling every unfinished item at once. If a task slips, adjust the next steps and revisit the priorities. The plan should reveal tradeoffs early, not require every day to go perfectly.

Separate submission from completion

Before submitting, check the selected college, program, application route, required fields, and attached documents. Read any agreements attached to your chosen route directly. Save the confirmation after submission and follow the college's instructions for checking application status.

A submitted form and a complete application may be different statuses. Track any missing materials or follow-up requests and keep relevant confirmation records. Use Arlo's application tracker to organize your progress, while treating each college's portal and official instructions as the source for its requirements.
